Field meetings update and date change

The meeting scheduled for Saturday 26th August to Plungar has been re-scheduled to Sunday 27th August. The move is to accommodate a visit to Kingfisher Bridge Reserve, a privately owned Nature Reserve near in the Cambridgeshire fens on Saturday 26th August, which was suggested earlier in the year by Richard Penson, one of the group members. It will be a chance to see some of the country's rarest plants, see some of the conservation work that is being done on the site, and have a day out with the group when we don't do recording! There will guided walks around the site and also bird-ringing demonstrations to see, etc.. More details about the site and the event, including directions, can be found on the Reserve's website. I suggest that we meet at the site at 11:00 a.m. The website says that refreshments will be available on site, but you can bring your own if needed. More details and a reminder will be sent nearer the date.

Please phone Geoffrey (07745487766) or Russell (07594 302127) to arrange a lift. There are a limited number of spaces in our cars, which are offered on a 'first come first served' basis.

Field Meeting 15th July

The next vascular plant field meeting will take place on Saturday 15th July, at Owston. Meet at St. Andrew’s Church (SK775079). Parking is available in the village, but park sensitively if a wedding or other service is taking place in the church. To cover as much of the area as possible, we will divide into two groups: one group will record in SK70T, to the south of the village, and the other in SK70U to the north. Both of these tetrads have permissive paths that expire on 31 July, so this will be our last chance to use them. The two tetrads contain a lot of arable and pasture farm land, hedgerows, village paths, roadside verges and tracks, and small streams.

The meeting is suitable for beginners and more experienced botanists, and will be a fairly leisurely day with plenty of time to discuss what we find. However, the group recording in SK70U will walk to Newbold and back (4-5 km) and will focus on recording, as there has been only one record since 2000, with 205 to find!

The meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. and continue until around 3:00 p.m. You're welcome to stay with us for as long as you wish, and to leave at any time, provided you tell us when you go. Please bring sunscreen, rain gear etc. to suit the weather, and lunch and a drink, if staying all day. If you would like more details or a lift, please phone Russell on 07594 302127 or Geoffrey on 07745 487766.
